About Ear piercing - Brief history of ear piercing and why ear
piercing is very popular
The history of piercing one’s ear can be dated as far as the ancient
times. Ear piercing is very common in tribal cultures. Up until now, you
can still see tribes piercing their ears
in a way that is different from the norm. There were also mummified
bodies that were discovered in different places in the world having ear
piercing as well. As a matter of fact, most of these discovered mummies
have ear piercings measuring from 7 mm to 11 mm. One of the oldest
mummies which they called as Otzi The Iceman have huge ear piercing.
They later found out that Otzi existed more than 50 years ago. Tribes of
long ago have big holes when piercing their ears in order to show their
status in the society. The bigger the ear tunnel pierce is, the higher
is their social standing at the same time. One of the main reasons why
ear piercing is prevalent among the male members of the tribe before is
because they believe that metals can drive away evil spirits. There were
also some tribes who used ear piercing to symbolize the dependence of
their young adults to them by the time they reach puberty. Eventually,
ear piercing became a status symbol particularly during the Roman
Empire. Some of the popular figures who had their ears pierced include
Julius Caesar, Francis Drake, and even Shakespeare himself also had one
as well. For them, the accessories that you put in the ear symbolize
power, luxury, and wealth.
Sailors
during the old times were also commonly seen with ear piercing as well.
They believe that this could help them have better eyesight while out on
the sea. But other than that, sailors always assume that they would not
be able to go back home alive and can be found dead anytime. Therefore,
their ear piercing can be sold by those who will find their body so that
they can be given proper burial. Until today, many people all over the
world (especially those who live in Western countries) are still into
ear piercing. Both men and women can be seen with different types of ear
accessories. However, the most unique and coolest designs are often used
by those who consider themselves as punks, emos, or even the Goths.
But instead of being a status symbol, ear piercing is now a form of
self-expression. More often than not, piercing in the ear is considered
by many as an art. Some people do this to show their rebellion while
others are simply fond of experiencing the pain associated with
piercing. |
